The Gambia Welfare Society is delighted to share the success of our recent Electrical Safety Awareness Project, made possible through a generous grant of £5,000 from Electrical Safety First.
The project was designed to improve electrical safety awareness among
communities within Leeds, with a particular focus on unemployed individuals and low-income families who may be unable to replace faulty electrical appliances.
As part of the project, we delivered an Electrical Safety Awareness Workshop, providing practical advice on preventing electrical hazards in the home, recognising unsafe appliances, and using electrical equipment safely. Participants also received guidance on reducing the risk of electrical fires and protecting their families.
In addition to the workshop, our team carried out home visits to 14 households, where we conducted Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) on a wide range of household electrical items. These visits helped identify appliances that posed potential safety risks.
Following the inspections, 24 unsafe electrical appliances were found to be beyond safe use. These items were condemned and responsibly disposed of before being replaced using the project funding. This ensured that vulnerable families could continue to use essential household appliances without compromising their safety.
This project has made a real difference by helping to reduce the risk of electrical accidents, increasing awareness of electrical safety, and providing practical support to families facing financial hardship.
The Gambia Welfare Society would like to express our sincere gratitude to Electrical Safety First for their generous support and commitment to improving the safety and wellbeing of our community. Their funding has enabled us to reach vulnerable households, improve home safety, and provide lasting benefits for families who needed it most.
We remain committed to supporting our community through initiatives that promote health, safety, wellbeing, and social inclusion. We look forward to building on the success of this project and continuing to work with partners to make a positive difference in the lives of those we serve.
